Industrial 3D data startup bestat has completed a ¥310 million (approximately US$2.1 million) Series A round.
The investors include Seihō Investment Works, Taiwan-based Darwin Venture Management, NANKAI NEXT Ventures—the corporate venture capital arm of Nankai Electric Railway—Mizuho Capital and Fidea Capital.
Founded in Tokyo in 2018, bestat plans to use the capital to develop its 3D.Core platform, recruit new employees and expand in Japan and overseas.
Turning raw scans into usable industrial data
Factories, construction sites, railway facilities and other infrastructure can be captured using laser scanners and converted into three-dimensional point-cloud data.
Collecting that information, however, is only the beginning.
The resulting files can be extremely large and difficult to process. Noise must be removed, objects recognised and information from different scans combined before the data can support maintenance, simulation, automation or robotics.
bestat’s 3D.Core platform is designed to make that process more manageable.
It helps companies generate, organise and analyse 3D information so it can be used for applications such as digital twins, equipment management, facility inspections and robot navigation.
The problem becomes increasingly important as industrial companies experiment with Physical AI: systems capable of perceiving and acting within real environments.
From the University of Tokyo to industrial sites
bestat’s technology emerged from research associated with the University of Tokyo’s Matsuo Laboratory, one of Japan’s best-known centres for artificial intelligence research.
Founder and CEO Naoko Matsuda holds a doctorate in engineering from the University of Tokyo and previously worked at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
The company has developed proprietary algorithms for processing point-cloud data, including patented technology that can automatically identify cylindrical structures.
In an industrial facility, that could mean recognising pipes, columns and other equipment without manually labelling every object.
Automating this work could reduce the time required to create equipment records, plan renovations, inspect infrastructure or prepare navigation data for autonomous machines.

Why Physical AI needs better spatial data
AI models cannot operate reliably inside a factory simply by understanding text and images.
Robots and autonomous systems need accurate information about distances, surfaces, obstacles and the position of machinery. They must understand the physical environment in which they are expected to move.
This gives bestat a potentially valuable position in the Physical AI supply chain.
The company is not building the robot itself. It is developing part of the data infrastructure that allows machines to interpret real-world spaces.
Its commercial opportunity will depend on whether industrial customers treat 3D data as a continuing operational requirement—not merely something purchased for an isolated digitalisation project.
Strategic investors with physical infrastructure
The composition of the Series A is particularly relevant.
Nankai Electric Railway manages stations, railway lines, depots, commercial buildings and other physical assets. These are environments where 3D mapping and digital twins could support maintenance and asset management.
Regional funds may also help bestat reach manufacturers, construction businesses and infrastructure operators outside Tokyo. Many face ageing equipment and shortages of experienced workers, creating demand for technologies that preserve site knowledge and make inspections more efficient.
Their participation suggests that 3D.Core may have applications beyond large technology companies and specialist robotics laboratories.
Taiwan as the next test
Taiwan’s Darwin Venture Management also joined the round.
Taiwan offers a substantial base of semiconductor, electronics and precision-manufacturing companies, making it a logical market for industrial automation and factory digitalisation.
bestat has indicated that it plans to expand internationally, including into Taiwan. The next question is whether technology developed around Japanese industrial environments can solve comparable problems for Taiwanese manufacturers.
What comes next
The Series A gives bestat more resources, but the company still needs to convert technical differentiation into repeatable commercial adoption.
Three developments will be worth watching:
Which industry—manufacturing, railways or construction—becomes the strongest market for 3D.Core.
Whether the growth of robotics and Physical AI produces recurring demand for spatial-data infrastructure.
Whether bestat can reproduce its Japanese use cases in Taiwan and other overseas markets.
Robots cannot operate effectively in the physical world unless that world has first been translated into information they can understand.
